Push Notification Issue

So I have scoured the forums and reviewed every thread on this and tried all the solution with no luck. Heres the story...

Push notification has been working wonderfully, much needed during the holiday shipping/porch pirate season, until my ISP went down. Once it came back up I have not received a single push. So here is what I have tried, help me see what I missed.

I have no blocking software and the firewall is off, and there is nothing in the log file.

Test set 1
Mac rebooted
SecuritySpy Updated
iOS app Deleted and reinstalled
Cleared iOS devices from SS
iOS notification re-enabled
Actions turned off and back on

Test set 2
macOS updated
iOS app Deleted and reinstalled
Cleared iOS devices from SS
iOS notification re-enabled
Actions turned off and back on

Test set 3
SS Updated to latest beta
iOS app Deleted and reinstalled
Cleared iOS devices from SS
iOS notification re-enabled
Actions turned off and back on

Note: I can send the test push notification from SS without issue. It hits my device in seconds.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thank you.

  • If the test notifications work, but actual notifications don't work, then the the most likely explanation is that Actions aren't actually being triggered. Under Preferences -> Cameras -> Triggers, what triggers have you enabled (e.g. video motion detection)? Also, make sure that Actions mode is actually armed (e.g. set to the schedule "Armed 24/7") so that you see an orange "A" indicator next to the camera in the Camera Info window.

If you have Actions mode armed, and you then right-click on a camera for which notifications are enabled in your iOS device (i.e. right-click on its video feed in macOS SecuritySpy), and select the "Trigger Motion Detection" option, do you then get a notification on your iOS device?
  • Ben,
    Thank you for the reply.
For Triggers on all my cameras I have "Enable video motion detection" selected. And for the two cameras that I want to receive notifications from they do indeed have actions armed and the "A" is orange in the camera info window for both.

I double checked that notifications are enabled on the iOS device, and I "Triggered Motion Detection", which I can watch it turn the "A" red and I have it activate another camera, and that one turns red as well. Both Cameras capture video, but no notifications are sent.

  • That all sounds correct. Do you still get the test notifications using the option from the Debug menu?

Do your camera names have any special/unusual characters?

Do you have another iOS device you can try this on?

Are you sure that you have actually enabled notifications for the camera(s) in question in the SecuritySpy iOS app on your device?

I'm a bit stumped by this problem so far - what you are describing basically shouldn't be possible! If there were a problem communicating with Apple's servers (e.g. connection-blocking software) then the test notifications wouldn't work. It's not a settings issue because your description of your settings sound correct. Any other error should be written to the log, but you say there's nothing in the log.
  • Ben,
I wanted to take some time to test before I replied, so I spent the weekend working through a few different items. Here is what I have tested.

First I used the debug menu and cleared out all iOS devices and sent a test to ensure that notifications were not still active. I uninstalled Security Spy from the iOS devices. Next I set up a trigger to activate different cameras when one camera receives motion. I enabled actions for all cameras(4 total) on the server. I then reinstalled the app on my phone and an iPad. I turned on the in app notifications for all devices on different cameras and sent the debug test. Both devices received the test notification.
I then performed a real time test and nothing happened. The cameras were motion was triggered, and that down streamed to actions that triggered other cameras, but no notifications were sent to either device.

I downgraded the SecuritySpy server version from the beta back to version 5.2, still the same. no notifications.

And there is nothing of significance in the log file related to notifications.

I agree with you, this must be something very simple that I am missing. But everything "appears" to be set as it should.
